Philly.com - Bringing the big screen experience back in No Libs - May 14th

By Matt Godfrey - Star News

“It’s a totally different experience to watch a movie in a theater than it is watching a DVD at home,” explained Doug Sakmann, co-founder of the local production company Backseat Conceptions.

It was a similar notion that sparked the interest of Sakmann and fellow Backseat Conceptions founders Zafer Ulkucu and Nick Esposito to get involved with making movies in the first place.

And with time, that sentiment gestated to a point at which the three needed to help Philadelphia realize what they already knew.

Since their love affair with what they call the “projected arts” began, and more accurately since they teamed up to form Backseat Conceptions in the summer of 2002, the trio has done much for the film scene in Philadelphia.

First came the company, then came the Backseat Film Festival, which just wrapped up its seventh installment; then came last year’s announcement of plans for the 941 Theater, at 941 N. Front St., along with the formation of the nonprofit Philadelphia Friends of the Projected Arts.

All money made at 941 Events goes directly back into the venue, no person or company makes any profit out of the 941 Theater. The 941 Theater exists for you but it can't exist without your support.

Massive utility bills, insurance, fire alarms, garbage disposal, constant renovations and a hundred other expenses regularly threaten the Theater's existence. The Theater has quickly become a beacon of arts and an irreplaceable center of culture in Philadelphia, please donate whatever you can afford to the theater every penny counts.

About the Theater

The Philadelphia Friends of the Projected Arts

941 Theater

The 941 Theater is run by the PFPA, a non-profit that seeks to further local access to media as it was meant to be seen, projected in a public space.

The PFPA is run by three main boardmembers who work full time for the theater. In addition to the board members there is the PFPA advisory board which is an ever-growing group of professionals from many professional walks of life including esteemed film directors, lawyers, venue owners, film programmers, etc. The advisory board enables the PFPA to get hundreds of years of culumitive professional wisdom to help in our important work.

PFPA: Mission Statement

While it is becoming easier to make and see many independent films it is becoming increasingly hard to see films properly presented and for filmmakers to monetize their efforts. This situation is already damaging the film community. People these days are more likely to see a small film on their computer screen or on their home DVD player. Rarely, if ever, do people see these films with the proper audio and video projection on a big screen with a room full of strangers. A high quality projected presentation is required to truly appreciate the art of filmmaking which is dependent on appreciating small details.

Small filmmakers face the same challenges that the studios face but at a much greater detriment. Whereas file sharing and other online piracy can damage a studio’s profit margin, it can obliterate the career of small filmmakers who are reliant on DVD sales to pay their bills and prove to producers they are marketable for future projects.

The PFPA will work to advocate these issues and bring national attention to them and solicit funds for this purpose. Locally the PFPA will support venues that showcase the projected arts and hold events that educate the public about this crucial issue. The PFPA is in the process of becoming a 501c3 in the state of PA.
